Final Portfolio Expectations

Below is the information that I gave out on the handout in class:

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Your last major task for this course is to compile a portfolio for your writing, much like a writer, journalist, o9r artist prepares as part of a job search or as a means of showcasing his work, etc. This is your way to demonstrate that you take your work seriously, that upon reflection you know how to change former pieces of writing, and that you’re excited about new work.

CONTENTS:

·         Artifacts: Your portfolio should consist of 3 pieces that you’ve written for class this semester. Each piece should be revised and typed onto your blog. You should include a variety of work so that we can see the range of your abilities. You will also need to include a short (about a paragraph) reflection with each artifact indicating why you chose to include it and explaining your revisions. One of the 3 should be your revised story book as we won’t have time to do the revision for class; then you can pick the other two pieces on your own.

·         New Piece: Submit 1 original piece that I have not seen that is also a representative of you as a writer. This can be in any genre we’ve studied or some other genre. Also include a paragraph reflection indicating why you shoes to include this piece in the portfolio.

·         Letter to the Reader: Besides artifacts and reflection paragraphs, the portfolio should open with a Letter to the Reader. This letter should introduce the reader (me and anyone else on Blogger) to your work and talk about what you learned over the semester, what you feel are your strengths and weaknesses and why you’re proud of your portfolio (minimum of 1 page in length).

FORMAT:

·         Blogs: All of the portfolio will be submitted electronically using your blog. Please make sure that your entries are clearly labeled, organized and that readers can find easily what they need.

·         Post Titles: Please use the post titles listed below so that I can find what I need

o    Post #14: Letter to the Reader See handouts and samples for more details

o    Post #13: Artifact #1 A brief reflection in italics should introduce this revised piece

o    Post #12: Artifact #2 A brief reflection in italics should introduce this revised piece

o    Post #11: Artifact #3 A brief reflection in italics should introduce this revised piece

o    Post #10: New Piece A brief reflection in italics should introduce this new original piece

·         Spelling/Grammar: Make sure that you check your spelling before posting your entries!

Your portfolio is due electronically on Friday, June 14th by 3:00 pm. It is important that you take this final writing task seriously as it counts as 20% of your grade for the course.

So to summarize, your final portfolio will include:

·         3 Revised Artifacts (original pieces) that you have written during the course

·         A New Original Piece

·         4 Reflections (one for each of the artifacts and the new piece—approximately a paragraph in length)

·         A Letter to the Reader introducing readers to the portfolio and reflecting on your growth this semester
